Flaxby's fabulous flower power

Flower power is raising smiles across the village, thanks to the Flaxby in Bloom team.

Team member Caroline Greenhalgh captured these images to show the burst of colour since flower troughs were installed at various points, the green planted up, grassed areas and pavements weeded, and road signs cleaned.

The village has its sights set on the Golden Rose Award in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom contest and judges are expected to be making a mystery visit over the coming weeks.

And while we have no intention of being shrinking violets in the competition, the knowledge of how much we love Flaxby is reward enough.

The green-fingered team comprises Caroline and Darren Greenhalgh, Judy and Trevor Cook, Mike Dodd, Pam and Ian Dawson, Sue and Mike Munden, Helen Baggaley, Jacqui Straughan, Buck and Kath White, Simon Meynell, and William Elliott. Simon created the troughs from wood donated by Philip Fulcher of Grassroots Solutions while Buck White has given the noticeboard and bench make-overs. Meanwhile Charlie and Sue Proctor provided red pots to complement the post box area.

It's hoped that residents will get behind the competition and show off their baskets, gardens, hedges, planted areas, and tubs, and consider ways their properties can add to the overall appearance of the village.

Judges say they will be noting cleanliness as well as the condition of items such as our bench, entrance signs, and traffic signs. The judges will also scrutinise our amenities which includes our defibrillator.

Yorkshire in Bloom administers the RHS Britain in Bloom campaign  the largest of its kind in Europe  across the region. The aim is to make lasting improvements to local environments.

Judges visit participating locations in spring and summer. Entries come from villages and towns as well as specialist areas such as public, private and charitable establishments, business premises, visitor attractions, caravan and camping sites, schools, youth environmental projects and further education establishments.
