Villagers branch out with Jubilee sapling

Villagers turned out in force for a tree-mendous event to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

Parish councillor Kath White planted a sapling on the Flaxby village green to mark the Queen's sixty years on the throne. A stone featuring a commemorative plaque was also unveiled.

Fellow parish councillor Bob Hearld, who was the master of ceremonies, invited everyone to toast the occasion.

The parish council donated the weeping flowering cherry and stainless steel plaque. The sapling, Prunus Frilly Frock, is expected to grow to around four metres high with a two-metre spread after ten years. It flowers in the early spring and is characterised by variegated leaves in the summer and multi toned autumn tints.

IDEAL OPPORTUNITY
Kath said: “The tree planting has given our small community an ideal opportunity to come together and mark an important milestone in our country’s rich history.

“So many villagers helped to make the occasion special.”

Residents are grateful to the following people:
  • Kath White for organising the event, stakes, ties, netting and for choosing the tree.
  • Buck White for providing and carving the stone, setting the plaque into it, and erecting it.
  • Charles Proctor for digging the hole for the tree and providing compost.
  • Mike Clark for providing concrete into which the stone is set and helping erect the stone.
  • John and Sheelagh Fowler for sparkling wine, glasses and bunting.
  • David and Pat Procter for wine and glasses.
  • Buck and Kath White for wine, soft drinks and glasses.
  • Everyone who shovelled soil around the tree and trod it down and to Andy Fletcher who watered it well.
