Hoping Flaxby will be bloomin' marvellous for Yorkshire competition

We're entering this year's Yorkshire in Bloom with our sights set on the Golden Rose Award.

And residents are urged to show off their baskets, gardens, hedges, planted areas, and tubs, and consider ways their properties can add to the overall appearance of the village.

Judges will be making a mystery visit over summer.

They'll be making a note of the cleanliness of the village as well as the condition of items such as our bench, entrance signs, and traffic signs. The judges will also scrutinise our amenities which includes our defibrillator.

The judges have assured us they're not looking for perfection - just a nice place to live and visit. Organisers say that the judges might visit at any time between late June and early August, but the village team is betting on the second or third week in July. The day will be confirmed nearer the time.

Flower troughs are to be made and filled with flowers and shrubs at:

  • Area between the post box and the notice board
  • Flaxby sign near Morrisons
  • Flaxby sign by the Old School House
  • Large square of land by the bus stop between Byways and Cedars

The village team says it needs a lot of broken pots, hard core, and rubble to fill the troughs so if anyone can help, get in touch with William Elliot or Caroline Greenhalgh and arrangements will be made for collection.

A wildflower area will be created in the village triangle and flowers will be planted by the Jubilee tree and plaques. The triangle grass will strimmed regularly. Meanwhile, the noticeboard and bench are set to be spruced up, and grass removed between the pavements and the road throughout the village

The next village team meeting will be held at 1.30pm on Thursday 13 June at William's house, 8 The Grange. Anyone who can get involved is invited to get in touch even if they can't make the meetings.
