We had garden party off to a tea
Well done to everyone who braved four seasons in one day and attended the garden party at Buck and Kath’s at Herons Keep earlier this month.
Around 45 villagers enjoyed a late summer cream tea and sandwiches. After taking outgoings into account, we have helped boost charity coffers to the tune of £122.
The money will go to Martin House Children’s hospice and pushes the money raised from previous events to well over the £1,000 mark. The hospice offers professional medical care and personal support to families where a child or young person suffers a life-limiting disease.
Many thanks for all the positive comments we’ve received about the party. We are keen to build on the successes of the past few years and will continue to draw up a social programme that will feature at least one event per season.
Starter for ten
Fingers on the buzzers. It’s that time again. This autumn’s Flaxby Village quiz night takes place on Wednesday October 19 at the Tiger Inn, Coneythorpe.
This event is back by popular demand following the success of our first quiz, last year.
Once again, we’re looking for teams of four. Entry is £1 per person and there’s a prize up for grabs. Teams are advised to get in early as places will, again, be limited. Teams are advised to arrive 7pm-7.30pm.
Contact Buck White for further details.
Oil bet this saves us some money
The rapidly growing West of Ouse Oil Co-operative has been flexing its muscles and securing savings for its members. As a result, of the co-operative’s recent purchasing power successes, a Flaxby sub group has been created.
Anyone interested in joining is asked to get in touch with Dr John Fowler of Rivendell, Shortsill Lane, Flaxby (see contact details section) advising name, address, telephone number, email address and oil tank size.
Copies of guiding principles for how the group will work can be obtained from Dr Fowler.
He said: “Orders are placed every couple of months so there is little chance of anyone
running short where adequate on site storage is present.
“There is no joining fee but members without internet access may be asked for a nominal fee to cover postage, printing, stationery and telephone costs.
“The Flaxby group will be working along with many other co-operatives in the area to secure the best deals.”
The cut-off dates for orders are 23 January, 20 March, 22 May, 25 July 2 October and 4 December.
Members will let the village co-ordinator know how much oil they require either as a fixed number of litres (minimum order 500 litres) or “fill the tank.” The village co-ordinator liaises with the syndicate co-ordinator who phones the various companies for the best price based on total volume required.
Potential members are advised that the co-operative does not handle any money. The invoice is payable direct to the supplier by the recipient within the stipulated period.
Best foot forward ... again
Torrential rain in July meant our village walk to Knaresborough had to be cancelled.
But Buck White has arranged a new date – Saturday 22 October. We’ll be meeting on the Green at 10.15 am and strolling/walking into Knaresborough. There’ll be time for lunch before meeting beside Blind Jack in the market place at 2pm for return walk.
We expect to get back about 3.30pm. Children are welcome. Use the bus if you only wish to walk one way. The number 57 takes ten minutes. Time from Flaxby is 13.26. Times from Knaresborough are 12.12 and 14.42.
Caught in the web
Earlier this year, the social committee followed in the footsteps of villages such as nearby Arkendale and set up a Flaxby website to ensure that residents can access information about events, read notices and get our growing list of recommended trades people.
Thanks to residents who have recently been providing us with business cards of those trades people who have done a good job. The size of the list and pressures of space mean we have had to move the directory to the village website. Feel free to get in touch if you have any recommendations.
We’re also keen to include any historical information about the village. The site now features a photo taken in 1952 which shows just how much the village has changed over the decades.
And if anyone has any interesting photographs of their own of Flaxby, get in touch and we’ll put them on the site. We’re particularly keen to show the village throughout the seasons.
The site can be found at www.flaxbyvillage.blogspot.com.
We'd love to hear your views on how it the new site can be used to help communicate what counts to residents.
