Flaxby Matters: social newsletter March 2011

A year of events
Many thanks for your kind comments regarding the events the social committee has staged during its first year. We are keen to build on the success and have been busy drawing up a new series of events for 2011. Full details will arrive through your letterbox but, in the meantime, here's a taster:

Spring kicks off with a wine/soft drinks and cheese party on Saturday 21 May. Entry is free. Bring a bottle (alcoholic or non). And summer sees the annual garden party on Sunday 28 August.

In autumn, following great feedback, we’ll be staging another village quiz night at the Tiger Inn. We’re looking again at a weekday in October.

And we’ll round off the year with the popular carol singing and Christmas auction on Sunday 11 December.

Hospice thanks
Staff at Martin House Children’s Hospice at Wetherby have expressed their immense gratitude for the £515 boost to its coffers. The money was raised from the Flaxby carol singing and auction. The hospice offers professional medical care and personal support to families where a child or young person suffers a life-limiting disease.

Hosts Buck and Kath White said: “Many thanks to everyone who contributed with auction prizes, donations and the fabulous mince pies. And a special mention to Charlie and Sue Proctor for their amazing Glühwein mulled wine”

Best foot forward
Get your boots on. That’s the message to villagers who enjoy a good walk. The committee is organising a walk to Knaresborough on 16 July. We’ll set off at 10am on a route through the fields. Walkers will be able to do their own thing in the town at lunchtime before we head back around 2.30pm. More details to follow shortly.

Going online
The social committee has decided to follow in the footsteps of villages such as Arkendale and set up a Flaxby website/blog to ensure that residents can access information about events, read notices and get our growing list of recommended tradespeople at the click of a mouse.

But we want it to serve the village so if you have an interesting anecdote, a gardening tip, a poem, or a recipe, share it with us. We’re keen to get hold of any photos of the village past and present. We'd love to hear your views on how it can help communicate what counts to residents.
