Flaxby flourishes with Yorkshire in Bloom silver

Flaxby is celebrating after securing a silver award in the Yorkshire in Bloom small village category. And we’re happy to report that our sister parish village Goldsborough secured a silver gilt.

Judges were impressed how Flaxby villagers had adopted and maximised green spaces to showcase their surroundings. They liked how residents had grown plants in their greenhouses to improve these areas for everyone’s enjoyment.

The award report said paths and verges had been cared for and wooden planters had been created and filled with topsoil from the local farmer. These stood proudly alongside residents' own planters. Parish council funding had helped to secure additional plants.

The panel also commended Flaxby’s work on community cohesion with mentions for the carol singing  and garden party fund-raising events, and the Blokes and a Brew gatherings where men get together and chat over a cuppa five times a year.

The judges said the award was a hugely encouraging start to Flaxby’s journey.

Meanwhile, a 30-strong group of Goldsborough volunteers had been 'dynamic' in helping residents and locals create a real energy in spotlighting the beauty of their village.

Parish councillor and Bloom Committee co-ordinator William Elliott said it had been a tremendous team effort that had helped show the village off to its best.
