Flaxby Matters: social newsletter September 2010

We had it down to a cream tea
Thanks for a fantastic turnout for our village cream tea. A combination of food donations and ticket sales helped us raise £130 for charity.

The organising committee now hopes the summer event, which saw more than 50 people attend, will become a regular date on the Flaxby social calendar.

And we’ve already had an offer to stage next year’s event but we’ll tell you more about what’s being planned nearer the time.

The cash from this year’s event has gone to Martin House Children’s Hospice at Wetherby which offers professional medical care and personal support to families where a child or young person suffers a life-limiting disease.

Question time
Start swotting up on your general knowledge.  We’re lining up an autumn quiz on Wednesday 20 October at the Tiger Inn, Coneythorpe, for Flaxby residents, kicking off at 7.45pm. The quiz is a response to villagers’ requests for more social events.

We’re looking for teams of four – families, neighbours and friends – so, if you’d like to
field a quiz quartet, get in touch with the committee or we can help you pull a team together on the night. There’ll be a £1 charge per person to cover prize money.

Going ... going ... any offers?
We’d love to hear from anyone who can host this year’s Christmas charity auction. Residents who have been to previous events will know they’re a great opportunity to share a mince pie and a drink with a neighbour and to stock up on some last-minute gifts.

This year’s event takes place on the evening of Sunday 12 December after the Flaxby Carol Singers have brought us festive cheer.

Other events
We’re still keen on holding coffee mornings and specialist interest groups. The ideas you’ve given us so far include gatherings for bridge, books, chess, computers (ebay and internet matters), dominoes, food and cooking, health and beauty, home brewing, Scrabble, walking and wine tasting. Kath White wants to hear from anyone interested in forming a gardening group (see contact details at end).

And if you’d like to tell us about an event you’re organising in
Flaxby, let us know and we’ll feature it in the next update.
