Flaxby Matters: social newsletter March 2010

Welcome  In the village questionnaire, you told us you wanted more opportunities for social contact and you were keen to hear about trades people residents have used and would recommend. With this in mind, the village committee has been busy on both counts.

An event for all seasons
Spring is about to burst forth and your committee is also springing into action by unveiling a programme of social activities for each season of the year to demonstrate the vibrancy of our neighbourhood. So, make a date in your diary now.

We’re kicking off with a wine tasting event courtesy of Jacqui Coverdale and Karl Hebden at The Cedars on Saturday 24 April, from 6pm. Attendees will be invited to bring along a bottle.

And Mervin and Jacqui Straughan, of 7 The Grange, will be hoping to build on the success of last year’s summer garden party held by Buck and Kath White with one of their own on Sunday 4 July.

Sharpen those brain cells because we’ll be tapping into your general knowledge skills when we invite teams from the village to compete in a quiz night at The Tiger Inn, Coneythorpe, in October (date to be confirmed).

And it wouldn’t be Christmas without the Flaxby Carol Singers bringing festive cheer on Sunday 12 December followed by our charity auction which is guaranteed fun as well as an opportunity to grab a few bargain presents. Last Christmas resulted in a £350 donation to Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Other events
Running throughout the year will be coffee mornings, gardening groups as well as history discussions. Other ideas include gatherings for bridge, books, chess, computers (ebay and internet matters), dominoes, food and cooking, health and beauty, home brewing, Scrabble, walking and wine tasting. Kath White is keen to hear from anyone interested in forming a gardening group (see contact details at the end).
Further details of the events will be provided near the time.

And if you’d like to tell us about an event you’re organising in Flaxby, let us know and we’ll feature it in the next update.
