An event or two for all seasons
The committee is keen to repeat the success of recent years with its social events.
Residents tell us they enjoy getting together and having the opportunity to get to know their neighbours a lot more. Little surprise, then, that some of the old favourites appear on our calendar of activities with at least one event per season.
SPRING kicks off with a wine and cheese party hosted by Darren and Caroline Greenhalgh on Saturday 27 April from 7.30pm. Folks are invited to bring along a bottle (alcoholic or soft).
SUMMER will see a garden party hosted by Mervin and Jacqui Straughan on Sunday 14 July.
The annual Knaresborough walk has grown in popularity so we’ll be donning our boots again on Saturday 17 August and setting off from the village green at 10am.
AUTUMN: after a successful three-year run, the village quiz at the Tiger Inn is being replaced with a Flaxby history evening on Tuesday 22 October. Residents who have any old documents, maps, notes, photos or other items of historical interest are urged to get in touch with Kath White or Sheelagh Fowler.
WINTER: we round the year off on Sunday 15 December in Yuletide spirit with our Christmas carol singing and charity fund-raising auction which, as well as being a great social, lets you bag some gifts when they go under the hammer. The auction will be hosted by Buck and Kath White.
Last year’s event raised £330 for Wetherby’s Martin House children’s hospice, a charitable cause the committee has supported over the years.
Flyers for each of these events will be dropping through letter boxes nearer the time with further details.
New arrivals
A warm welcome to the new arrivals in our village. We hope you enjoy life here and we’d love to see you at any of our social gatherings. They’re a great way to get to know your neighbours in a friendly and informal environment.
Litter picking
We like our village to look its best at all times and that means keeping on top of the occasional litter problem. A date will be organised for the next litter pick. Volunteers are being sought. Please contact Kath White if you would like to help us on the day.
Doggone! That’s made a difference
Thanks to the efforts of most dog walkers clearing up after their pets, York Road and the verges are much cleaner. Keep up the good work. With warmer weather on its way, the road will be used more by children and people taking a walk. For those who have not yet adopted the habit, please help to keep our village clean – take a bag and clear up after your dog
Branching out
The construction company involved in the development of the old Manton cold store has announced its intentions to provide a tree for the village.
The donation is being made by HACS Construction Ltd and its waste contractor YorWaste under a scheme to offset their carbon footprint.
And the parish council is keen to know where Flaxby residents would like to see it planted.
Suggestions can be made to parish councillor Bob Hearld either by phoning 864524 or emailing him at stationmaster@bobbled.plus.com
I know someone who can do that
The recommended tradespeople directory has grown so much that it now resides on the village website www.flaxbyvillage.blogspot.com and is proving invaluable for residents finding services ranging from aerial fitting to roof repairs. You can recommend anyone who’s done a good job. Contact Buck White or email us via the website.
New committee members wanted
We’d like to boost our six-strong committee to eight to bring some added inspiration and help us plan and stage our events. Please get in touch with a committee member if you’d like to get involved. Contact details can be found at the end of this newsletter.
Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch is a long established voluntary organisation where neighbours get together to reduce crime and make their area a safer and better place to live, work and play.
Effective schemes work in partnership with police and other agencies. Sharing information about crime, bogus callers, anti-social behaviour or vandalism and details on personal and property security and local initiatives help members take precautions.
Watch representatives for Flaxby are:
Bob Hearld (864524) and Buck White (860353) responsible for: York Road from Station House up to Herons Keep, and from South Edge up to Malham (19 in all)
Trevor Cook (869538) responsible for: The Grange, plus numbers 1 - 9 The Grange (ten in all)
Tony Nicholson (966815) responsible for: Shortsill Lane from 2 to 10 inclusive plus Hillside Cottage, Lilliel Cottage, Rivendell and Coneyway. Woodmans Cottages 1 & 2 (facing the green) and Flaxby Grange Cottage (15)
When the old school room is occupied, it will be added to this patch.
Residents are urged to give patch reps their email addresses so that information such as police notices can be passed on.
Any suspicious activity should be reported to your patch rep, and to the police as appropriate. The number for non-urgent calls is 101, and for urgent calls 999.
